Self Compassion Meditation with Edanur Taktak

Self Compassion Meditation with Edanur Taktak. The definition of ‘compassion’ states that it is ‘sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others.’ This is fairly straightforward. As human beings we have an innate predisposition or perhaps capacity, to feel compassion in the face of other’s suffering.

Perhaps this is a programming given to us by Nature for a very good reason. A certain safety clause for humanity. With the existence of compassion, there is a sure way the world has a control mechanism that triggers when suffering and cruelty becomes overwhelming.

Self Compassion

“Compassion literally means “to suffer together.” Among emotion researchers, it is defined as the feeling that arises when you are confronted with another’s suffering and feel motivated to relieve that suffering.” by Dacher Keltner, Berkeley Wellness.

We have this innate response that is there towards others, in different degrees of intensity amongst different people. However it is not instinctive or common, to have this instinctive reaction, towards ourselves. Quite the opposite, there seems to be a lot of mixed messages regarding compassion towards oneself.

If your self is suffering, there is a danger of ‘self pity’ which can lead to a cycle of negative associations that is destructive. Which is not compassionate at all. The key factor here is that ‘compassion’ propels us to want to alleviate others suffering. There is a motivator to help. Feelings of self pity or self indulgence should not be misconstrued as compassion.

Self Compassion Meditation

“Compassion language is something we are not used to have in our daily lives. When we start to practice this language it may feel, look or sound unfamiliar and strange. I advise for anyone who practice this meditation to practice it until they embody this language. Not just in their minds but also in their bodies.

Learning self compassion is learning to practice kindness and peace with yourself. Self dialogues are often limiting, punishing or simply unkind. It may seem obvious that we should be kind to ourselves. But in the course of the day, every day, how often do we actually practice true compassion for ourselves.

For most of us, we learn from very young the concept of winning and losing. Pleasing and disappointing others and we know how to judge ourselves. There are more works related to building self esteem than there are of learning self compassion. We need both for wellness. Although, it is in self compassion, that we learn to be kind and accepting of self, with no other expectation or demand from ourselves. We do not have to perform, to achieve, to excel. Compassion accepts and nurtures.

Self Compassion Meditation we have here today, from Edanur Taktak encourages us to take a few minutes, only a few minutes to practice compassion towards self. It is another first step that is powerful and healing. For that, Eda has given another wonderful gift, not just for today, but one that will serve you whenever you need. Who Would Benefit from these meditations?

“Actually, for two and half almost three years we are going through a very stressful life. Because of the coronavirus pandemic. This is a fact of life right now. I would say that everyone can benefit from self compassion meditations. In our times today there are a lot of verbal and emotional violence. Self compassion meditation gives us a chance to compassionately and softly get in touch with our hearts again.
